| Penn State’s new interim president recently stated that, in the future, Penn State would “not only do what is required under the law, we will do what is right.” This, to me, seems to be an understated acknowledgement of fault. What was required of the University by law is clearly less than what was morally appropriate. Why is this acknowledged years after the fact, after people have been arrested and fired? Where was the outrage when it happened? How afraid must employees be of their bosses to be afraid to speak to the police? Undoubtably policies wil be written and positions will be created siting a chain of command or to oversee such misdeeds in the future. The new University President seems to recognize that not enough was done. So does the public. We all must be willing to do the right thing to protect those that can’t. We need to care more about protecting the innocent and less about protecting an organization’s image. |
